VHF 405-line coverage, 1968-1985
Click here for a map of The Independent Television Authority's London service area from a document published in an 'ITA London' booklet from March 1967, a year and a quarter before London Weekend went on-air.
The reach of the main transmitter at Croydon, broadcasting on Channel Nine, ranges almost from Swindon in the west to Clacton in the east, and Northampton in the north to Worthing in the south, covering a quarter of the UK's population.
VHF 405-line transmissions ceased on 3 January 1985 and, in reality, most LWT viewers by the mid to late 1970s would be viewing 625-line pictures from the transmitters below.
UHF 625-line coverage, 1969-2012
Click here for a map of the Thames/LWT service area from an Independent Broadcasting Authority booklet published in 1979.
The main Crystal Palace service area is in pale blue, and the main Bluebell Hill transmission area is in grey. The dark blue area represents the secondary service area of both transmitters and the hatching denotes areas served by the larger relay stations. From 1 January 1982, Bluebell Hill was switched to provide signals for TVS and then Meridian Broadcasting, leaving LWT and Thames with the Crystal Palace main station and associated relay transmitters.
The Crystal Palace analogue UHF signal is due to be switched off in 2012.
Digital Terrestrial (Freeview) coverage
London Weekend Television, now branded ITV1, broadcasts on the Crystal Palace DTT transmitter, Multiplex 2, Service ID 8261, with a power of 20 ERP (KW). The DTT signal was doubled in power from 2001. To find out if you can receive these signals click here.
By 2012, when digital switch-over takes place, the effective power of this main transmitter will be increased and more Crystal Palace relay stations will be equipped to transmit DTT, extending the coverage area. Currently, Reigate, Guildford, Tunbridge Wells and Hemel Hempstead relay stations transmit digital signals. Transmitter coverage map available at ukfree.tv.
Digital Satellite (Freesat, Sky) coverage
ITV1 London is broadcast on the Astra 2D satellite, used by Freesat and Sky, and intended for domestic reception in the UK.
Viewers with a London area postcode will automatically receive the station on channel 103 of the Electronic Programme Guide (EPG). Viewers from outside this area can also view ITV1 london on EPG channel 963 (with audio description function).
